Your Squarespace 5's site navigation is a menu of links visitors use to explore your content. It’s often the first thing visitors interact with when they arrive at your site. Most sites have at least one navigation, and some have multiple. Your navigation can link to pages on your site, pages on other sites, files, and filtered content.
Before you begin
- Your top navigation can only have page links, not widgets.
- In sidebars, you can't add pages to widget sections.
Step 1 - Choose your site layout
Navigation can display at the top of your site and in sidebars. Your site's layout sets where the links can display.
- Open Style mode.
- Click on the Banner & Navigation tab. If you haven't already, you'll be prompted to create a custom style.
- Use the Horizontal Navigation icons to choose whether the top navigation displays above or below the header. Click the left icon to hide the top navigation.
- Use the Column Layout icons to add one or two sidebars to your site. Click the left icon to choose no sidebars.
- Click Save Changes.
Step 2 - Add links to the top navigation
If your site layout includes a top navigation, also called a primary navigation:
- Enter Structure Mode.
- Click Add Page next to the top navigation.
- Add and configure the page.
Tip: You can also add pages in the Architecture area. The top section in Sidebar 1 becomes your top navigation.
Step 3 - Add pages to the sidebar
If your site layout includes one or two sidebars:
- Enter Structure Mode.
- Click Add Page next to any page section in the sidebar. (If you don't see an Add Page option, scroll to the bottom of the sidebar and click Insert Section first.)
- Add and configure the page.
Tip: You can also add pages in the Architecture area. To learn more, visit Organizing your site.
Style the links
In Style mode, click Fonts, Colors & Sizes to style the links. If you haven't already, you'll be prompted to create a custom style.
Add links to other websites
You can add an external link to your navigation with the Single Link page.
