Squarespace allows you to easily import entries from your Typepad weblog to your new Squarespace journal. When you import your entries, your comments will be brought over with your entries. If Typepad includes your tags and categories, these will be imported as well.
Step 1 - Export from Typepad
To create an Export file, access your Typepad blog and click the Settings tab. Then, click the Import/Export link to enter the Export area. Next click the Export button within the export section of that page.
Once you've clicked the export button, Typepad will begin exporting your data. This could take several minutes depending on the size of your blog. Upon completion you will see a message indicating that your blog export is ready to be downloaded. Just right-click (alternate-click on Mac) the Download link and choose a place on your computer to download and save the file.
Step 2 - Access the Squarespace Blog Importer
Login to your Squarespace site and click the Website Management link. Then navigate to Blog Importer under the Data & Media heading.
- If you have multiple authors in your blog and wish to carry these over, you must be using a plan that supports member features. Ensure you create accounts for those authors before you import your journal and that the Display Names you create in your Squarespace account match the author names of the source blog.
- When entering a URL for the blog to be imported, please enter the URL that you currently use to reference that blog whether this is a custom domain URL or a subdomain like: yoursite.typepad.com.
- If you're using a custom domain in your current blog you must NOT map that domain to your Squarespace site until your import request is complete. Doing so will prevent proper URL redirection and prevent referenced media files from correctly transferring with the imported entries.
Step 3 - Setup File Import
Make sure to click the Import Via an Export File option, as Import Via the Web is the default selection. Enter the full URL for your TypePad site and then select TypePad from the list of options in the drop-down menu and click the Continue button to proceed to the file selection page.
Next, you will see the Additional Information page. This step is optional and if you choose to enter your Typepad username and password, the Squarespace importer will then gather and redirect your old Typepad entry URLs in an SEO friendly way. Either enter your username and password here and click the Get Redirect Information button, or if you prefer not to do this, you can click the I do not want to redirect my old URLs button to continue.
Note: If you choose the Redirect option, you will see an additional screen prompting you to choose which Typepad blog you would like to redirect. Simply choose the blog you want from the drop-down menu and click the Redirect this Blog button.
Step 4 - Select Import File
Next you'll be prompted to choose a file from your computer to upload for the blog import. Click the File button to open the File Upload dialog and select your TypePad export file from your computer. After selecting the correct file, click the Upload File button. Once the file has successfully uploaded, you'll see its path within your Squarespace storage area listed in the text field. You can then click the Import Entries button to begin the import process.
This process can take some time, depending on the number of entries being imported from your previous blog. You'll see a status bar after clicking the Import Blog button that will update you on the status of your import request. The import will transfer all entries from your previous blog site as well as images and embedded video references automatically. Your previous URLs will also be automatically redirected (if you chose this option when importing) to the new URL locations for those entries on your Squarespace blog. This will insure that your visitors using established links to your content don't see a "page not found" message when accessing one of your older entries via direct link.
Step 5 - Verify Import
Once the import has finished, click the Finish button to complete the process. Your newly imported blog page will begin as a disabled page within your Squarespace site titled Imported XXXX-XX-XX (where "x" represents the date of your import). You can access and enable this page clicking the Website Management link and navigating to Architecture under the Structure heading.
