By default, visitors without editing permission will see a CAPTCHA field when posting comments in:
- Journal pages (blog posts)
- Guestbook pages
- Discussion forums
Squarespace 5 was integrated with a version of CAPTCHA that's now outdated. This prevents visitors from leaving comments, because the CAPTCHA field can't be completed.
This is a known issue. We recommend you disable CAPTCHA for your Squarespace 5 site by following the steps below for each Journal, Guestbook, and Discussion page on your site.
Step 1 - Open page configuration
- Go to your Journal, Guestbook or Discussion page.
- Enter Structure mode.
- Click Configure This Page.
Tip: You can also open configuration in your site's Architecture area.
Step 2 - Disable CAPTCHA
In page configuration, uncheck Enable Captcha. The section where this option appears depends on the page type:
- Journal - Commenting / Permission Options section
- Guestbook - Simple Discussion Options section
- Discussion - Discussion Options section
Remove spam
Disabling CAPTCHA increases the chances that your blog will receive spam comments. You can remove them with the Manage Comments area in your Website Management bar.
Error message
If CAPTCHA is enabled, visitors that try to enter a comment currently see a "reCAPTCHA V1 is shutdown" error message:
