Disqus is a third-party commenting platform you can use to replace Squarespace's default commenting system in a Journal Page.
Squarespace offers a built-in blog comment system. However, you may want to use Disqus to support threaded conversations, image comments, or other commenting functionality we don't currently support.
Before you begin
- Disqus is a third-party service and its commenting system won't integrate with Squarespace's built-in comment management and notification features.
- Adding Disqus will remove any existing comments on blog posts, Guest Books, and Discussion Pages from your site.
- These steps rely on code from Disqus. If you're having issues with this code, contact Disqus support or visit their documentation for more help.
- Disqus comments are URL-specific. This means comments only appear to visitors who access the site using the same URL. Visitors using your custom domain to comment can't see their comments when visiting your built-in URL. For this reason, you'll want to provide the same URL for all visitors to view your site.
- To avoid issues, we recommend adding your primary domain to Disqus as a trusted domain. Visit Disqus' documentation for further assistance.
- Adding code to your site is an advanced modification that falls outside of the scope of Squarespace support.
Step 1 - Create a Disqus profile
Go to disqus.com and click Get Started. Follow the prompts to set up a Disqus account for your site.
Step 2 - Copy the code
After creating your account, you'll see a Select Platform screen. Don't click the Squarespace icon on this screen, as it will only work for our current platform.
Instead, go to the browser bar and replace install with squarespace. Then press Enter.
Tip: If you're on a different screen, enter the following URL but change username to the Disqus shortname for your site: https://username.disqus.com/admin/squarespace/
On the next screen, copy the code from the Alternate Squarespace 5 Instructions section.
Step 3 - Add the code to your footer
To add the code to your site, edit your site footer:
- Log into your site.
- Enter Structure mode.
- Scroll to the bottom of your site and click Edit Website Footer.
- Paste the code into the field.
- Click Save & Close.
Disqus comments will now appear on your site's Journal Pages and blog posts.
Commenting with Disqus
The Disqus comment system replaces Squarespace 5's built-in system. You can see how Disqus looks on your Squarespace 5 site by visiting your Journal page.
To leave a comment, a visitor will first need to first log in using a Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, or Google account, or create a new Disqus name.
For help adjusting the appearance of your Disqus comments panel, visit their documentation.
