Adding a blog post

Once you've created a blog on your site by adding and setting up a Journal Page, add blog posts to share thoughts and opinions with your readers.

Note: For help adding a podcast, visit Podcasting with Squarespace 5.

Step 1 - Add a blog post

  1. Log into your site and go to the Blog Page.
  2. Click Content Mode.
  3. Click the Post New Entry annotation.

Step 2 - Add content

  1. In the WYSIWYG, choose whether you're adding a Text, Image, Link, Quote, Chat, or Video post.
  2. Use the available fields to add and format the content. All post styles except Chat include a field where you can add images, links, videos, and custom code.

  • To save your work without publishing to your site, uncheck Published, then click Save. (If Published is checked when you save, the post will be published to your site.)
  • Paste content into the editor in plain text format to ensure you don't accidentally include unwanted formatting.

Step 3 - Set up post options

Next, set up your excerpt text, references, and trackpack pings.

  • Click Summary to add a short teaser excerpt on the blog landing page, rather than displaying the full text.
  • Click References to give credit to other sites by adding a source URL.
  • Click Options to set up trackback pings. You can also add a podcast file and choose when to disable comments.
Tip: Click Summary, References, or Options again to go back to the main WYSIWYG editor.

Step 4 - Add tags and categories

Tip: Add Social Widgets to display content on your site from Twitter, Flickr, or an RSS feed.

You can add HTML to individual blog posts, or to all blog posts at once. This allows you to add custom code for elements like Facebook Like buttons and Twitter embeds.

Note: Adding code to your site is an advanced modification that falls outside of the scope of Squarespace support.

Individual posts

To add a snippet of code within the WYSIWYG, click the gear icon. Once you've added your HTML, the code snippet will appear as an icon in the editor.

To code your entire post in HTML, use the drop-down menu on the top right to select Raw HTML. This is useful if you're trying to change the look of the entire blog post.

All posts

To add up to three code snippets to all blog posts:

  1. Go to your Journal Page while in Structure Mode.
  2. Click Configure This Page.
  3. Scroll down to Post Display Configuration.
  4. Click HTML Snippet 1, 2, or 3.
  5. Add your code in the field that appears.
  6. Click Hide & Save.
  7. Drag the HTML Snippet elements within the Example Post to choose where it displays. HTML Snippet elements can be on the same line as each other, but not with other preset elements (such as Author, Date, etc).
  8. Click Save Page Configuration

The snippet will now appear on all posts for this Journal Page.
